I know we've talked at great length about Triple A and how good they are and that they have no business playing in 1A.  My question is though, what should the UIL do after this year to Triple A?  If you move them out of 1A, do then what class do they play in?  I was told they got put in 1A by the TEA because they had a 1A enrollment.  I've heard people say put them in 3A.  Why 3A, why not 4A or 5A?  This topic also brings up another topic I'd like to hear peoples opinions on.  And that is, should all charter schools be playing in UIL or should they be in another competition like TAPPS?  I've heard people say charter schools have advantages other public schools dont have and its not a level playing field.  But I've also heard there are charter schools that do it right and play by the rules.  What is your opinion on all this?

I like the proposal of making them play in the classification of the smallest school in there attendance zone. Example red oak life would have to play 4A.

I do not know the rules and regulations for the Charter schools or TAPPS. If they are playing by our UIL R&R then by all means allow them to play in the classification for their size. If any of the Charter schools do not abide by the same (completely), then they should not be in the UIL.

Forget about putting them in with the 4A or 5A. I remember when Jesuit was a very small school and they still dominated the big schools in football. It is not a level playing field.

I do not know anything about the differences in the TAPPS OR Charters schools.

Charter is public as far as the TEA is concerned they have no reason to play in TAPPS. The Charter that the school operates under, and must be approved by the State, determines several things but two that are relevant to UIL competition. The max enrollment figure and geographic boundaries that they may draw students from. If they have a relatively small max enrollment and have several 5A HS in their attendance zone it can create a problem in determining classification in the traditional manner which they currently are doing. It's a quality over quantity issue. We all know the reason 5A has better athletes than 1A is the amount of kids they can choose from to field a team. It's nit that you don't have good players in small schools there is just fewer of them. When a school can, theoretically, enroll the best athletes from several large schools it's even an unfair advantage for the largest HS to compete. I think competing at the lowest classification in your attendance zone is absurd. If they are just trying to win games they can amend the charter to include some 1A HS. Play in the largest classification in your attendance zone if they don't want to play in 4A or 5A then don't include those schools in your boundaries. They still could have several schools to choose from which is still an advantage. My question is IF a team like triple A is so good why would you want to play at 1A? What does it prove if they win state? It's a joke it's like a HS raising a banner for winning little dribbler championships. If they are so talented play with the big boys. Not just non district that means nothing. Do it in the playoffs when the games count

They have ZERO business playing in the UIL, in ANY class. They are a straight running AAU organization, who "formerd" their own charter school...& kept their AAU team pretty much in tact. Best team I have ever coached against. TEA & the UIL really screwed the pooch , here. I wonder UIL & TEA are not man enough to admit they made a horrible mistake.

there is a twitter campaign against this #AAAdupesUIL   this is one way to fight this...

Soonermagic, that's a great question. What do yall think the UIL will do? Will they take action after this year, or wait for realignment, or do nothing at all?

The TEA and The UIL are moving with an agenda to create more "school choice" of course this really comes from our Governor and Legislature. I believe they are going to continue to push for more Charter school and Private School inclusion to UIL activities. This push has continued even with an overwhelming objection by public education people. Charles Breithaupt has repeatedly told UIL members that "this is your organization" that they are just a governing board who works for Texas Public Schools. That is a load of crap. The UIL knows good and well that schools do not want Private school involvement at all or Charter School involvement if they can select students from various schools. The UIL will do what the politicians tell them to do with this issue. They are promoting school choice and they want the choice to look better than current public school systems. It doesn't look good if the Charter schools aren't better in athletics because they have failed to look better in academics. I will be shocked if they do anything to correct the problem. They will have some confusing way to fix it that doesn't fix it at all. If we stay on the current path public schools will continue to get the short end of the stick until they look like a failure. I sound like a conspiracy theorist but I truly believe that's what's going on.

Got an Email on the rules adopted by the UIL. Charters will play in the lowest calssification in their boundaries unless their enrollment requires them to be larger. It's not proposed but official. I'm trying to copy the PDF that has all of the changes that will begin next year and post it

Not sure exactly what to do with charter schools. While I don't like what the UIL has allowed in the case of AAA, I don't think schools that struggle at the 1A level like Advantage Academy (Grand Prarie) or Summit International should be penalized. There are charter schools out there that are truly trying to help academically, and don't care about athletics.
Then there are schools like AAA where it stands for All About Athletics.
I am partial to letting them compete in TAPPS. If they can recruit students like a private school, I believe that is where they would be best suited to compete athletically or academically. While I don't follow UIL academic competition, I would imagine that some of these charter schools do pretty well at the State Meet.
As for what the UIL will do. I guessing they wuss out and make some half attempt to right what they did, but after Triple A gets two years of domination. The rule change that will have Triple A in 3A is a weak attempt, but it won't stop what they are sure to become. Remember their first year of AAA in 3A will be King McClure and that stellar sophomore class's senior year...

If there wasnt enough controversy surrounding Triple A being at the state tournament in their first year of competition as a charter school, region 1 just added more fuel to the fire.  I told you guys to keep an eye on El Paso Harmony a few weeks ago and sure enough they ended up winning 1A-I region 1 today.  So now we'll have TWO 1A-I charter schools at state.  If anything, I hope it just brings more attention to the situation and the right thing is done.  Do you think EP Harmony's presence will add more attention to the already big story surrounding Triple A at the state tournament?
